Peruvian Christmas

Hello family and friends,

Merry Christmas! Christmas in Perú, what an experience.  The traditions are a little different.  For example, they really only celebrate the 24th.  They stay up until midnight that night and eat dinner when the clock strikes 12:00, then go out and celebrate and drink alcohol until the wee morning hours.  And there are lots and lots of fireworks! We didn´t do the partying bit, obviously;), but we did do the eating part! Holy cow we ate so much.  I was the fullest I´ve been in a long while.  And we went to bed at 10:30 like normal...but those fireworks woke us up so fast. We sprinted up to the roof (where everyone hangs their clothes to dry) to take pics.  It was a fun little Christmas.

Speaking of Peruvian traditions: they have some fun beliefs about coldness.  There´s a story here about some guy who played soccer, then went to take a cold shower and it killed him.  So never take a cold shower after exercising! And there´s a variation of that story where he stuck his head in the fridge and died.  So never put your head in the fridge after exercising! A common one is the drinking cold things when you have a cold.  Never drink cold things when your throat hurts! Or eat ice cream! I take cold showers after exercising every morning, so thank you all very much for your prayers of protection.  They´re working.

I read something in 3 Nephi that I liked this week.  It says, "And their hearts were swollen with joy, unto the gushing out of many tears, because of the great goodness of God in delivering them out of the hands of their enemies; and they knew it was because of their repentance and their humility that they had been delivered from an everlasting destruction."  Then thinking about this verse, in light of what Pablo says in Corinthians that, "For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet. The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death."  What a day the day of the resurrection will be! Or maybe a lot more than just one day.  Hope and happiness and joy and rejoicing and gratitude! That´s what makes Christmas so special, obviously.  The birth of the one who makes that all possible.  He resurrected, he lives, and he guides his church! His gospel was restored and is being restored every day.

Sorry for the shortness of the email, the time has gone fast today! Keep the updates coming, I love reading them! Sports updates would be especially appreciated;) And pictures!! Love you all, feliz navidad y año nuevo!!

Missionaries and Dogs

Dear family and friends,

A solid week here in Chimbote! The highlight was Pablo´s baptism.  And there were no craft presentations to get in the way!  It was a great experience, as usual.  It´s always kind of fun trying to really grasp the meaning of what´s actually happening.  We know it, but I don´t think we really understand! At least I don´t yet.  Things of eternal significance happening right before our eyes! Saving ordinances performed by restored priesthood authority! I always try to wrap my mind around it, especially during those ordinances, but I´ve yet to really grasp it.  But it was a great experience, and the confirmation on Sunday sealed the deal!

One funny thing: we´re working with an investigator named André who believes that the Book of Mormon is true, but isn´t sure about Joseph Smith.  He just believes it because it talks about Christ, I think.  We always take it for granted that if they know the Book of Mormon is true, they´ll automatically know that Joseph Smith is a prophet too, but these things are so new to investigators that they don´t make that connection so easily! A little challenge we´re dealing with.

Sometimes as a missionary you feel like a huge scary dog.  Just because of the fact that as we are walking the streets of Perú, there are so many people that take one glance and cross the street! Haha they are so scared of us! That´s one thing I´m looking forward to when I get home: being able to catch people by surprise and start up gospel conversations with them.  In a white shirt and tie, everyone already knows what´s coming!

What an unbelievable time of year Christmas is.  I have come to appreciate it so much more these past two Christmases.  It´s so strange; I always knew the "true meaning of Christmas" and all that, and always tried to remember, but it´s just different being away from all the commercialism and submerged in what really matters.  My love for the Savior has grown so much! I think they´re things and feelings that just come with experience, so I still have a way long way to go, but my feelings for Christ and Christmas are different now.  We sang Joy to the World today in our Christmas devotional; in Spanish it says, "Rejoice, Jesus was born.  Savior of the world.  And every hear shall turn to him to receive their king." I just found myself smiling while singing.  He lives!! It´s so unbelievable.  I can´t even describe it.

Have a MERRY CHRISTMAS!! Love you all!

Darn Craft Presentations

Dear family and friends,

Another week has passed us by, and Christmas is almost here! The #iluminaelmundo campaign is in full swing here in Peru which is a pretty sweet thing.  The video is the exact same though, and for some reason the mission office sent us the English video instead of the Spanish one.  So every time we show the video to an investigator or member, they´re translating the scriptures at the end.  But it always brings a good spirit anyway!

Today for PDay we did a little shopping and found some ties for 9 soles, or 3 dollars! So I definitely splurged on those 3 dollar ties haha.  There are some real perks to Perú!

We were going to have a baptism this Saturday, but...there was a stake relief society activity that took up the whole entire stake center!! And of course, it was a CRAFT PRESENTATION!! Man oh man was I frustrated.  We´re going to put off performing a saving ordinance for a 74 year old man for a CRAFT PRESENTATION?? And not only a 74 year old man, but one who´s been real hesitant about getting baptized.  We were always talking about how it was such a sacred, serious thing, and then we change the date on him at the last minute.  He was all good with it, and we´re doing it this Friday instead, so there shouldn't be any problem.  But lesson learned, the time is come and is far past to ask for a copy of the stake calendar of activities.

We´ve got a few others that are super close too! They´re so good! We´re teaching three people -- Ana, Flor, and André -- who are reading the Book of Mormon and praying to feel of it´s truthfulness.  Still a few struggles in the coming to church part, but we´re working with it! The problem is finding.  Haha President Rios "burned" us (Latin slang that also kinda works in English) saying that we should feel dejected and worried for our key indicators this week.  I´m pretty sure the connotation doesn´t translate exactly, because he´s a very nice man...but we are pretty stressed about it! The goal for new investigators is 8 a week, and we´ve found 2, 3, and 1 in consecutive weeks.  Dang I feel so motivated to just get to work and knock every door in Bellamar, but I´m pretty sure there´s a better, more effective way, one that requires lots more patience and love, but equal diligence.   What´s that way, you ask?? .....I don´t exactly know either.  Yet!

Two quick thoughts from this past week: an understanding of the godhead is so important in conversion! Understanding who we are praying to, and who will give us the answer to our prayers.  Understanding who Jesus Christ is, which of course leads to faith in him, repentance, baptism, etc.  Understanding the personage of spirit that will teach us the truth.  If an investigator doesn´t understand that, how will they be converted?? Work to do there.  Also, we often feel that we aren´t being blessed despite our best efforts.  However, "being blessed" and "having an easy life" are certainly not the same thing! In fact, they may be opposites!  Heavenly Father ALWAYS blessed and blesses the righteous, even if their life isn´t always exactly easy.  Thanks for listening to my spiritual though. :)

Have a super good week!

Love, Tanner

PDay Activities

Dear family and friends,

I usually come into these email sessions fairly prepared with what I´m going to say.  But not today! This may be lots of rambling, so buckle up!

Mmm...we went to the Christmas devotional yesterday! We could only go if we took an investigator, and luckily one of ours was able to go! His name is André, the guy we found last week.  We had a great talk beforehand about the Holy Ghost and the role it plays in our conversion, and just really invited him to pay close attention to his feelings and thoughts as he read the Book of Mormon, and as he listened to the talks that night.  As I listened, I was going, "Oh yes! Yes! That´s so true, this is so perfect for him!" Afterward, we asked him how he liked it.  His answer? "I mean, yeah, anything good is from God right?" He was...less impressed than I was.  It´s so interesting how we can, as members of the church, be so impacted and feel the spirit so strongly as we listen to the bretheren speak, while others just don´t seem to feel it! Or maybe just don´t recognize it.  I thought it was super interesting.  And he kept refering to President Eyring as "the brother" haha.  He´s a great guy though, we´ll see how he progresses!

A few other people: a guy named Pablo is getting baptized this week! He´s been listening to the missionaries for a while now, and all his family got baptized a year or two ago.  He was just always afraid to commit! We had a sweet talk with him this week, with his returned missionary grandson there present as well, and just talked about the doctrine and blessings of baptism.  Two lessons learned there: 1) emphasizing action without teaching doctrine rarely works, in any circumstance, and 2) investigators understand a lot better when the teacher is someone they love.  So his grandson taught him about the gift of the Holy Ghost and the remission of sins, and BOOM! December 10, Pablo´s getting baptized.

We also are teaching this girl named Ana who, when left with the commitment of reading 3 Nephi 11, read to 3 Nephi 17.  The first time in my mission that that´s happened! So that was sweet.  She just works a lot...darn work.

One of my favorite activites here is going to the mall.  We go kind of often, to buy cleaning supplies for missionaries and on many P-Days.  There´s a Burger King there that I love so much.  I didn´t even like Burger King that much in the states! But a good old "King Pollo" with a "Cono Relleno" always just hits the USA spot.  We also play soccer with the members on most P-Days.  I love sports.  I love watching soccer, and playing FIFA.  I love running around.  But it´s pretty humiliating playing soccer with 13 other super good latinos.  Pretty humiliating...and they get competitive too! And show their frustration when it goes through my legs! Which is most of the time haha.  But it´s okay, I just imagine playing basketball in a church gym and it makes me happy again.

But that is all for this week! The work goes on! Transfers came and went with no changes, so we´ll look forward to six more weeks with Elder Fernandez in Bellamar and see what we can do to hasten the Lord´s work! Man the time goes fast.

Love ya lots!!

Pollo a la brasa (part 2)

Dear family and friends,

What an insane week! For real, it was a wild week.  I can barely remember all that happened.  Tuesday was a crazy day.  We got a few fun calls from the offices informing us about new rules, just basically about food here.  We can´t buy refreshments for zone conferences anymore, and we can´t eat together as missionaries for any occasion...shoot.  So we were kind of mourning about that all day;) But we didn´t let it stop us!  We knocked this one door on Tuesday, and a 27 year old guy named André walks out.  We kind of had a little discussion, and then get on the topic of religion.  The first thing he said was, "I´ve got to get baptized, I just don´t know in what church!" Haha we were pretty surprised! So we had a good lesson with him about the restoration and he committed to coming to church.  He didn´t make it but we´re excited to work with him anyway!

That night, just as we were finishing planning, we got a call from the health secretary telling us that one of the sisters was sick and throwing up and needed a blessing.  So we threw our church clothes back on and rushed over there with her district leader.  I honestly felt kind of like a superhero; getting the call, putting on the uniform and getting to the scene as fast as possible, etc.  It felt pretty sweet haha.  So that was a crazy day!

Wednesday, we had our zone conference, the first one that I´ve taught in.  Man it´s a fun thing.  I have so much more to learn about teaching and leading discussions but I like doing it.  One of the assistants was there and dropped the bomb that we couldn´t eat ANY FOOD outside of our pension.  Not even if it was wrapped! So there was a big hullabaloo about that.  We were getting calls from members and missionaries the next three days complaining and asking clarifying questions and special permission.  Haha it was nuts.  We called the other assistant to clarify and he said, "No, nothing has changed.  Just no prepared food."  So now everyone is more content.  All these food rules!

Thursday was, of course, Thanksgiving!  Which doesn´t exsist here.  So it was just a good old normal day.  However, that night we asked our pensionista for pollo a la brasa to celebrate the special occasion.   It was a good ole Peruvian style Thanksgiving dinner! We did do a little "What are you thankful for?" ceremony before eating, which really brought the holiday spirit too. ;)

Hmm...had an interchange with an Elder Weeks this week.  He´s so awesome.  He earned every merit badge possible and had his Eagle when he was 14!!  He´s pretty new in the field (9 weeks) but he´s just got the missionary spirit, it was super fun to be with him and learn a few things.

Wow, what a week! Sometimes I get kinda frustrated because of the darn apostasy!  There are so many different ideas; all religions are right, choose the one that fits you best,  true religion is loving others, "church" is just a building where people go.  It´s such a challenge figuring out how to overcome those false beliefs!! Every once and awhile I let it get me down, but I know I can´t do that.  It does, however, make me so grateful to have the restored gospel in my life.  To have restored priesthood authority by which saving ordinances can be perfomed and covenants can be made.  To belong to an orginization led by the resurrected Jesus Christ through His prophets and apostles, an organization designed to help families be happy and eternal.  To have received the gift of the Holy Ghost from an authorized priesthood holder! Unbelievable blessings that we often take for granted.  There are people in Bellamar that are searching for these things!  We´ve just gotta find em.

I love all of you so much, happy late Thanksgiving and have a great week!!

Love, Tanner

Pollo a la Brasa

Dear family and friends,

In reading my last email, I realized something might have been confusing.  I said, "I hit my one year mark this Thursday."  When I said that, I meant this coming Thursday, not this past Thursday! But now, a week later, I can say I hit my one year mark this past Thursday! It´s a pretty wild feeling.

We had mission leadership council this week which was sweet! We analized the talk "The faith to find and baptize converts," which Elder Anderson gave at the most recent Mission President Seminar.  It´s such a good, motivating talk!  But as good as that was...the lunch might have tied it haha.  We went to a "pollo a la brasa" place after for Sister Whitney´s birthday.  Pollo a la brasa is basically rotissere chicken with fries and tomatoes and carrots and mayonaisse and pepper sauce.  It´s a Peruvian classic, and it´s pretty tasty if I do say so myself.  So that was also a bonus.

Another first this week: a dog bit me! Not actually bit though, more like grabbed on with his teeth and then let go.  It just felt like someone grabbed my calf for half a second, it didn´t even break skin.  But it still scared me to death, I shook that thing off like I was doing the hokey pokey! But with adrenaline.  That old dog.

Also, I got a haircut this past Monday.  All was well, until she combed all my bangs down in front of my forehead and just gave them a snip! I was trying to calculate in my head, thinking, "Wait a second.  If I´m imagining right, that´s gonna be pretty uneven!" And indeed it was.  But it´s not too bad, you can´t really notice.  Perú is so unique! :)

I love the war chapters in the Book of Mormon! I just finished this week.  The verse in Alma 48 about Moroni is great by itself, but I was using that verse to learn so many other things! Just using Moroni as an example and looking at what he did as a leader and disciple of Christ.  For example: a Christlike leader prepares against a time of need; a Christlike leader strengthens weaknesses; a Christlike leader does all he can to help the people, but even then feels sorrow when they don´t obey; seeking positions of leadership and power for the wrong reasons is from the adversary!! Tons of true principles, I was loving it.  On to Helaman!

Well, that´s about it for this week.  Love ya tons and hope you have perfect weeks! Keep studying your scriptures!! (I thought that would be fun to put;))

Love, Tanner

Looking for Jasmine

Dear family and friends,

Another week has passed in Perú.  A fun little bit of information: I hit my one year mark this Thursday! I can´t believe that it´s been a year since all that goodbye stuff.  I can testify that that was truly the hardest part.  It´s a relief to have it all in the rearview mirror, and I´m pumped to have one more year to give it all I´ve got as a full time missionary! I have a feeling that it´s gonna fly.

Here´s a pretty randomg thing: they don´t use 8.5"x11" paper here! It´s all like a half inch bigger, which is pretty bothersome.  All my papers poke out of their folders by just a little bit and get all wrinkly.  Things that never in a million years I would have thought of at home when I thought about the "culture change."

We had kind of a funny experience this week.  An appointment had fallen through and as we were walking to our backup plan, we saw a house with the name "Jasmine" painted in big letters, right on the front of the house.  We thought, "Well, here´s a great referral.  Let´s knock and ask for Jasmine!" So that´s what we did.  The lady yelled from inside the house (as is custom here), "Who is it?" Us:"Excuse us, is Jasmine home?" Lady: "Who are you?" Us:"We´re missionaries, representatives of Jesus Christ, and we have something that we´d like to give to Jasmine!" Lady: "Um....no, you´re mistaken! Jasmine doesn´t live here!".....Well, that´s fine.  We might have been mistaken.  But painting JASMINE on the front of your house, when there´s no Jasmine that lives there, seems pretty mistaken too.;)  We got a good laugh after.

I read a statement in Preach My Gospel chapter 1, that goes something like this: "You have been called to represent Jesus Christ in helping people become cleansed from sin."  It really struck me this morning.  What an unbelievable responsibility! We are to stand in Christ´s place, as his authorized representative, and use our priesthood authority to cleanse people from sin! Lessons, family home evenings, fellowshipping of members, or extending commitments, don´t cleanse from sin.  They´re all means to an end.  BAPTISM AND CONFIRMATION.  Priesthood ordinances do cleanse from sin.  How grateful I am to know the restored gospel and have the chance to make and renew covenants every week, covenants and ordinances that bring the Holy Ghost and cleanse from sin.

Well, I hope you all have wonderful weeks, and I'll talk to ya next Monday!

Lots of Other Missionaries

Dear family and friends,

First of all, happy Tuesday! Our P-Day got all switched up because our zone got to go to the temple today! It´s about a 2.5 hour ride in bus, so we got up at 4:00 AM to get to the terminal in Chimbote, then Trujillo, then the temple and make the 8:30 session.  So it´s been kind of a long day, but I love being in the temple! We´ll see if I have enough time to add a pic or two...

But the week has been pretty long! We changed houses on Tuesday, and when I say house, it´s literally a house.  Most missionaries here have just a room or two that they rent, but the missionaries before me were lucky enough to find a two floor house for about the same price! So our house is ginormous.  We had all the elders over on Tuesday morning to help us move, which was really nice.  Also got to know a certain Elder Bischoff.  Like many of my relationships with people, it began with a discussion about BYU sports.  He´s a pretty big fan, so we got talking about that, then the NBA, then a little golf and high school sports and high school and Utah and the conversation was just a rolling.  If we would have gone to the same high school (he went to Pleasant Grove), we would have probably done lots of stuff together.  Always fun to meet new people right?

There are lots of Peruvian jigs that really make you want to dance that have been coming out lately.  I´m honestly excited to get home and add Peruvian music to my playlist! It´s kinda weird...but it says in Preach My Gospel chapter 7 to adapt to the culture of your mission too!

Also, with the enormity of our house, it makes it fit to house more elders! The secretaries of the mission, Elders Velasquez and Millett, were in town to get a few things done and stayed with us for two or three nights.  It was fun to get to know them a little more, Elder Millett is also from Pleasant Grove and Elder Velasquez is from New York.  I proselyted with him a few hours on Thursday as well which was a neat experience.

Oh, but another thing with the house (it´s gonna seem like I´m obsessed here).  We have yet to install the water heater, and the water is SO COLD! Three times as cold as in Virú.  It´s extra motivation to exercise in the morning and heat up.  At least I´m not totally missing the Winter in Utah in November feeling, though!

And Friday, we had room inspections! The Whitneys came to Chimbote and first surprised us by visiting our room with no notice.  Then, we went with them to all the other missionaries in the zone on surprise visits, just basically making sure it was clean and seeing if they needed anything for their rooms.  It was uneventful, but it´s always fun spending a morning with the good ole Whitneys.

I´m loving the mission.  One thing I´ve really learned here is how to seek personal revelation.  How grateful I am for a Heavenly Father who wants to reveal his will to us! We´re so uncapable of doing it alone, but with prayer and fasting and scripture study and pondering, the Holy Ghost really guides us and impresses upon our minds the courses to take! Again, things I KNEW before the mission but never really understood or experienced.  If that makes any sense.

Well, hope you all have wonderful weeks, and I'll talk to ya next Monday!  Thanks a bunch for the letters and pictures!

Inside the mind of Tanner Hart

Dear family and friends,

The goal of this email will be to give everyone an idea of all the thoughts and feelings I´ve had this crazy week.  It may be long, and it may be boring, so feel free to move on the the next one if you want;)

Wow! The first week in a new area is always tough.  I miss Virú! The people, my companion, the city, the members.  But, the members and people here really welcomed me warmly.  The best welcome I´ve recieved from a ward so far! And only the third one...

One of the hardest things has been, of course, having to learn all the streets and names and faces! I normally talke lots of time during the week, just as we´re walking or in the apartment, to think about the work.  What we´re doing, what´s not working, possible solutions, stuff like that.  Well, all that pondering time has been replaced with learning all the new stuff! So in that regard, it´s been a temporal-rather-than-spiritual week, if you will.

My companion is super interesting.  He´s a recent convert, who joined the church because of his girlfriend, who introduced him to the missionaries.  He was baptized, and one year later came on the mission! He´s from the jungle; his town has no internet access.  He found out what facebook was when he was 16!  When I got here, I was kind of suprised to find that the work was kinda slow, and that the missionaries, though not lazy, were just a little more inclined to having fun than what I was used to! I love having fun, but there´s a time and a place, right?  It´s completely to be expected though; I live with three other Elders (for now) and I´m the only one who was born in the gospel! So I´m looking forward to jump starting the work a tiny bit and just getting to work! Elder Fernandez is super willing, and I´m excited to work with him.

One interesting thing in this mission is that we do 0 street contacting.  Nada.  The "Talking with everyone" is lacking to say the least.  It´s true that the best chance to find prepared people is through the members, but I feel that sometimes we have the mindset that we´re only missionaries from 2:30-9:00 (proselyting time), and the rest we´re something else.  I have been feeling the need to really be better at opening my mouth, talking to people everywhere.  I feel like at least it will help me feel that I´m a missionary 24/7!  I´m sure that experience will be the best teacher, but any advice from past, current, or future missionaries would be helpful.  How do you just start up a conversation with someone??

One thing I really want to work on is being more assertive, as a missionary and as a leader.  I´m...not that assertive haha.  All the good leaders in the scriptures were bold when they needed to be bold! It´s something I lack right now, but I´m really focusing on that and trying to be more like Ammon; on his third day, he took charge and saved the Lamanite flock!

I´m loving the war chapters of the Book of Mormon.  Again, learning about leaders, one thing I love about Moroni is his ability to change weaknesses to strengths!  I love that principle: a good leader makes strong what was weak.  What a blessing to have Christ as our leader, the perfect one to make weak things become strong unto us!

And of course, Happy Halloween!!

Love you all, hope you have a stupendous week!

Love, Tanner

Doing it Gladly!

Dear family and friends,

A few fun things have happened this week...I think.  One thing that´s been kinda wild: so we have this recent convert named Tatiana.  She´s been really getting into everything as a new member, which has been great to see.  For example, she decided (completely by herself!) that she was going to memorize the 13 articles of faith.  She´s always showing us the pictures and quotes that she "likes" on Facebook from the pages of the church and prophets.  So that´s been sweet.  The only problem is, she has this "friend."  He´s a guy from another church, one of the angry ones.  When he found out that she got baptized, he started sending her all sorts of discouraging stuff.  She would tell us this and we would just encourage her and tell her to not pay attention, basically.  Well, he started this week to get all this stuff off the internet and twist some stuff and is sending it all to her, and now she´s kinda confused.  We had no idea what to do, except just tell her to quit searcing the internet to find spiritual knowledge! We had a little lesson about that and I think it kind of helped, but we´ll have to see how it all turns out.  If she trusts the spiritual impressions she has received from the Holy Ghost, she´ll be just fine!

I studied a few happy things this week in Alma.  For one, there´s a little part in there that talks about "the sacred word of God, to which we owe all our happiness."  I and many of you can say the same thing about the sacred word of God.  Aren´t we grateful for the gospel in our lives? For the scriptures and words of living prophets?? I really do owe ALL MY HAPPINESS to them. Also, it talks about the believers, and that "all those who were true believers in Christ took upon them, gladly, the name of Christ, or Christians as they were called, because of their belief in Christ who should come."  A true believer in Christ does his work gladly.  Makes and keeps covenants gladly.  Keeps all the commandments gladly.  Shares His gospel gladly.  The knowledge of his atonement drowns out any sadness we may feel for temporal things!

Transfer news: after five transfers here, I´m off to Chimbote! I´ve already been in that city, but it´s a different zone, Chimbote South.  I´ll be serving as a zone leader there, so we´ll see what kind of crazy things the changes have in store! I´ll just look forward to gladly doing the work of the Savior, wherever I am called!

Sorry for the shorter email this week! I don´t know what happened, I think time went faster haha;) Talk to you all next week!!

Love, Tanner

Saying Goodbye to Virú
